Learning to surf in Nov/Dec - where to go?

Postby simone67 » Fri Jul 15, 2005 5:32 pm

Hi! I'd like to treat myself to a couple of surf lessons for my birthday which is at the end of November. As a beginner, I am not looking for big waves, but for good surfing instructions in a warm climate. I'd appreciate any recommendations you might have, both in terms of surfing lessons and locations for Nov/Dec. Thank you.

Depends on where you live, and how much dinero you would want to spend to get away, I reckon.

Hi Wobbler!
I live in Norway too and am looking to learn in November/December, as well. Money is always an issue, unfortunately, so I'm not looking for 5 star luxury package or private lessons. If you have any recommendations for a moderatly priced, decent surf "school", I would appreciate your sharing. Thanx...

Hello, Guest.

First of all, I can't recommend any surfschool, as I have never been to one.

November/ december is around the time the dry season starts in Latin America, and some parts of South America. Costa Rica was once the perfect place to learn. It is now so Americanized, that I would no longer recommend the place.

But hey; if you can deal with it, it's still cheap by european standards. There are shite loads of people floating around trying to learn everywhere on whatever floats, so you won't be the only one.

If you are into a bit more of an adventure I'd say go to Sri Lanka. Cheap, uncrowded and good waves.

Marocco

Hey...good tipp for Nov/Dec is Marocco. It's not too far from Norway, and it's beautiful to surf.
There's a surfschool www.surf-adventures.com who can provide you with good accomodation and surf lessons in a town away from tourist crap.
So if you love surf and culture...go there...

Check this one out, they have cheap winter rates. I haven't been there but according to some surf magazine it's suppose to be good.

Caribbean: Cabarete, Dominican Republic

Hi Simone,

You definitely should go to Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. We live close to the best surfspot of the island (maybe of the Caribbean). A really relaxed place, friendly people, surfschools and easy going wave. The place is beautiful and Cabarete is a great town to be. A lot of things to do, many restaurants and bars, and a good admosphere.

Have fun!
