Help to choose the longboard

Postby seeker » Fri Aug 21, 2015 4:53 am

Hi everyone,

Can you please help me to choose the right longboard. I am 91kg, 184cm. I have been surfing for few years (with big gaps). Currently have 7.6 minimal and a 6.7 shortboard for bigger days. I feel like my minimal does not give a big advantage on smaller days. So I want to buy a proper longboard as it seems so much fun:) Mostly it will be for smaller days up to 1-1.5m waves. I also want to learn cross steeping, nose riding and that sort of things. For bigger days I will have a shortboard then.

I am looking at second hand ones and not sure about the size and shape. So atm I am looking at 9.6/24.5/3 with a square tail and rounded nose with a bit of rocker and a single fin which can be regulated. Just wondeing if that will be good for my goals?

Thank you.

Sounds good and in the weight / height range , watch the nose rocker, if it is too great then the board is more designed to give some short board characteristic in turning.
9ft to 9'6" no pronounced nose or tail rocker the shape sounds good .
Let play time begin

too wide doesn't make slow, too narrow doesn't make slow. You make it slow or fast. Too wide boards could be sometimes hard to control. If you don't know the difference from a squash tail and a pin tail, I would look more at squash tails. Especially for 1-1.5 foot waves and you wanting to cross step.

try posting pictures of the used boards you find. Ten different 9'6" board will ride totally different from each other

Looks like you are based in Australia based on the boards you are showing.
Whereabouts?
The Burford is a good basic board, surf jam forget it, the Kempo maybe others go hum!
I'm guessing Queensland??

Yellow Kimpo looks to have Red-X or something similar for sidebites. Will be hard to find fins. But if you intend to only go single fin, it don't matter.

South Point Timpone with the red center is a great board. I used to ride one. It is a molded epoxy.

Burford can't tell cause of the perspective but looks more like wide point back Pig shape

Last rainbow railed one looks like a Guy Takayama-ish but sure it's not.

Thank you guys for your help again! I ended up buying Southpoint Timpone epoxy. I have never had an epoxy (had 5 different boards in my life). Today was the first day I tried it. Even though conditions were so lumpy, I really liked it! It forgives a lot :D and a bit stiff as well probably because it is epoxy which is good as I am a big guy (90-93kg). I feel like I am falling in love with longboards :D Also it turned out that the board is not actually 9.2, but 10, 22.3/4, 3. So again even better and hopefully it is more than enough to learn nose ride for me and have a lot of fun :D

Wow, you got the 10'0" version. I rode the 9'2" Timpone. He's a good shaper from Maui, Hawaii

Jaffa thank you! will do for sure!:)

waikikikichan Yea:) 9.2 is a yellow one on your picture, but the white one with the red centre is actually 10:) they are very similar I believe, but the 10 ft version is a little bit wider and thicker and obviously longer:) which again is better for a bigger guy like me:)
