Longboard maneuver

Postby oldmansurfer » Sun May 24, 2015 6:26 pm

Back when I was riding my 9'6" longboard I would sometimes turn off the top of a wave and the board would like get in a groove or stick right to the top of the wave with the nose pointed down the line and the board right on the edge of the lip. It seemed really stable there and I would just let it cruise there for a moment then eventually the wave would break under the board and it would get steep and the nose would drop and I would drop back down the face to the bottom. I did this a few times before I quit riding the longboard. My fun gun never does this. I wonder if there is name for this maneuver? I have no idea what it looks like but it felt good. The only time another surfer saw me doing it he said something like "Oh my gosh, I was worried for you." Any of you longboarders do this?
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Isnt that basically what noseriders do - the tail locks into the crest of the wave and you cruise along? Maybe you should have been running up to the front to hang a few!

Yes...when I'm on my 9'6" it happens....sometimes I do like you described, but usually I shuffle up the board and turn more down the wave and crouch to get back in....best I can ever get is a cheater 5....

Maybe..... I didn't look at the back side of the board but it seemed like the board wasn't locked in just cruising along the edge of the lip and this is like a delayed re-entry or a delayed floater or something different from what nose riders do. The funny thing is it seemed automatic just turn up to that spot on the lip right in front of where it is breaking and the board just cruises along till the wave breaks under it and then the nose turns down and I re-enter the wave face. I think if I were standing on the nose it would have dropped down much sooner or gone faster and maybe kept up with the wave.

When you nose ride the board is breaking over the top of the board but in this case the board is on top of the lip and the wave breaks below it. Or do you have it break below the board so you look down the wave and the whitewater goes all the way to the bottom below you? Not a nose rider so not sure about that.

Sounds like a floater. Fun stuff.
