Begginer story

Postby Scariest Surf Adventure! » Thu Jun 30, 2005 12:29 pm

This thread is for your scariest surfing time ever! The time you felt like pissing yourself, ect.

Mine was probably in Rhode Island and i was padding out in about 3-4 surf, i was a true bigginer and had no idea what i was doing.... There was a huge set coming in so i decided to try to duck dive/turtle (because i did my research on surfing). This monster (to me) wave came in that seemed like 8 feet (in reality it was more like 5) and i started to panic because it looked like it was gonna break right before it got to me. I thought "oh man what should i do????" and then i saw the long boarder coming down the face of the wave. I dove underwater aiming to get deeper than his fins and he just passed over me... it was so scary...

well, this is pretty embarrasing, i was in about knee deep water and i see something wrap around my leg and its a snake and i throw my board and haul azz and scream like a 9 year old girl. The bad part is i dont freak out and scream when i see a shark...most of the time...
p.s. i hate snakes and spiders...

The most frightening thing that has happened to me was in Newquay.

It was low tide at Towan beach and about 6 ft. Anyone who knows Towan knows that it closes out really badly at low tide.

I'd been out for a while and got pitched over the falls. (nothing unusual there) but as I tried to kick my way back to the surface, both of my calves cramped so I couldn't swim properly.

I flailed with my arms and just broke the surface in time to get 1/2 a breath before the next wave dumped on me. I know it's a classic but this happened for 4 waves of the set.

I actually got washed up into about knee deep water before I could try and sort my calf muscles out.

I swallowed so much sea water I was sick there and then on the beach.

I just lay on the wet sand next to a pool of my own vomit for about 10 mins to recover.

That was scary!!

i got cramps in my thighs when i was surfing yesterday. hurt like hell trying to get out of the water so i could stretch it out. It sucks when they dont go away no matter how much you stretch. Ohh and i stood on a weaver fish as soon as i went back in the water. :?

Cramps, muscle spasms usually result from inadequate hydration and a lack of electrolytes in the body.

Cold water adds to the possibility of getting a cramp or spasm.

I realize it's impossible to carry a water bottle on the board, but you should have one on the beach. In the sun you should drink plenty of water, and replenish electrolytes.

Sports drinks like GatorAde are good sources of electrolytes. But you want to drink one of these with about 4 equal sized bottles of plain water. Otherwise you get too many electrolytes and a lot of sugar.

That's not good either.

Bananas are a good source of potassium. One of the critical electrolytes. Bananas on the beach are easy.

I keep a cooler in the truck (which is parked right off the beach and accessible) full of water, sports drinks, fruit, food.

Easy to get out in the surf and deplete all your nutrient stores. Take a break now and then, come in and get some nourishment/water.

i have never really had a problem with cramps but idk maybe i am not good enough for cramps  but i totally agree with having a cooler full of goodies waiting for u in ur car cause it always makes ur day so much better.

but my worst surf story of when i began surfing was like my second time out i started on a 5 11 and have rode about nothing else cause i love it and my second time out i bailed and my board flew up into the air and when i surfaced it landed right on my head it hurt so bad.......

one day at virginia beach with 3-4 foot waves, i was cuttin down the line and looked behind me to make sure i wasnt dropping in on anybody. luckily, nobody there, but as soon as i turn around theres this body boarder screamin down the line, coming straight at me. i kinda tried to bail while yankin on my leash in order to not hit him, but it didnt exactly work. board slammed him in the head, and i was thinkin he would have an eye screwed or cracked skull, whatever, i was thinkin he was gonna sue me. ended up the guy was alright, barely hit him. he was cool with it and we ended up surfin together for a while.

Rhode Island as well (like the first poster). for you locals it was at a little secret spot called s---nd beach. hehe. any how, waves were about waist to chest high. my friend and I rolled in about a half hour before sunset, and were surfing well into the dark (scary). couldn't see a damn thing. seaweed so thick that you couldnt see your board under you, looked like you were laying on the weeds and the weeds were holding you up. so here i was, me and my friend sitting there waiting for the next set, chit-chatting away, and all of a sudding she yells "paddle!" and points behind me. I look and there is this wave at least head high (and at this point it is totally dark, so i can just see this huge shadow over me). so i paddle like hell, but i'm to late and go through the washing machine. pushed me so far deep and under the weeds, I didn't think I could get back to the surface. By the time I did get to the surface, the next wave in the set was crashing down on me and pushed me under again. not as deep the second time, as I was prepared for it and kicked harder so it didn't push me as much. after inhaling much seaweed, I managed to scramble onto my board, and belly-ride the next wave back to the beach where I proceeded to puke for about 20 mins from inhaling so much seaweed. That night I was combing seaweed out of my hair for like an hour and a half. very scary and nasty. do now want to do that again. definately think twice before surfing in the dark.
