Doesn't count unless you ride it all the way to the end...

(there are people who are missing a gene, I think. the fear gene. One of my friend's 9yr olds boys is like that - stop looking at him for 2 minutes and he will climb a 70ft tree or onto the roof of the house or try to see whether he can break through a window by running at it. He will be a big wave surfer, except he doenst understand why you should bother to learn to swim when you can just let the wave ragdoll you back to shore)

 My personal scoring system counts any wave where I make the drop, so that would definitely count for me

...except that I have a very active fear gene...
You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

The big wave guys discuss what it means to just try to catch a wave that size. Just that he tried means something and that he made the drop means something but I wouldn't think it should qualify for ride of the year but maybe wipeout of the year....that's just me and the Big wave awards aren't being chosen by me.

I wonder how many attempts were made to get the ones that appeared in the video. Still, even if it was 1/5 success rate (or 1/100), that's some pretty impressive surfing (and the recovery at about 1.35 is extraordinary). Looks like a good wave, the reef wasn't too shallow (although hard to tell)

I think that is Alana Blanchards boyfriend Jack Freestone. Pretty darn good surfing and good waves too.

Its interesting that this style of surfing isn't what appears in WSL/competitive surfing, except very occasionally at the end of a wave someone might try something. I've no doubt that the competitors surf in a way that maximises their points in light of the scoring rules, and the rules don't encourage it. But I do wonder if now and then, for one event perhaps, they could have a scoring method to maximise 'trick' surfing. Would probably get some views from the non surfer as well.

certain maneuvers require certain waves so sometimes you don't see much airs in the WCT contests but if you watched the last QS contest at Lower Trestles Felipe Toledo did 3 air reverses on the same wave (lots of surfers were throwing airs). I think if the conditions aren't perfect then success rate goes down so then it is risky to attempt them in a contest. In less than perfect conditions most surfers would only do them if they were ahead and they needed to better an already high score or as a last ditch effort to make a huge score (unless you are JJF).

There is a WSL QS event about to begin but there will be no live feed of it. It is the Local motion surf into summer Pro at Alamoana Bowl. I have never surfed the bowl because it is always so crowded and the surfers there are very aggressive hot tempers and all not my scene. But because of that fact I did catch one of the best waves of my life in a nearby break in much less crowded conditions. Anyway here is a video of the bowl

Big wave hedge surfing...it's a terrible idea but actually more sensible than his shore break contest!
