Surf spot in Europe march, Morocco or Canaries ?

Postby jridd9 » Sun Feb 22, 2015 3:45 pm

Hey pretty much what the title says, looking to tap into some of your knowledge!

want to get away for couple weeks middle/end of march what would be a good spot in Europe with solid conditions.

I read on one site that taghzout in morocco is blown out towards the end of march is this true?

also theres there is Portugal, don't know huge amount about winter surf there.

any other suggestions or recommendations very much appreciated.

thanks guys!

I've only been to Portugal. It is brilliant, everything is perfect! Lots of sunshine and probably warm during March. Just stay on the West coast and enjoy the surf. Peniche is amazing, you get waves every day and any kind of wind / direction. There's always a spot where you get wind shelter and offshore conditions.

There are 48 pages of location topics, quite a lot are on the areas you want!
Have a read though see if it helps

Yeah I did use there search function but there wasn't anything specific about the place at the actual time of year I was wondering about.

I don't suppose it would be much if a hassle for someone who's been to help me out quickly

try this site I used to write for them, it has gone defunct but the information is good.
It was buried by trolls and spam, hope it helps

Been to both.
Went to Morocco in April several times, no wind and average crowds. I like the waves around Sidi Ifni in the South, but Taghazout has so many breaks.
Canaries (been to Lanzarote and Fuerte only) - both were lots windier (it's a windersurfer's dream from April onwards) and a lot more crowded and aggressive in the water (the latin thing I guess).
Both were fun - the Canaries had more things to do in the way of nightlife and cafes/restaurants whereas Morrocco was more sedate but culturally a lot more interesting (for me). No package tourists and holiday resorts.
I preferred the surf in Morocco because of the lesser crowds, generally bigger waves and availability of more diverse waves.

Hi, If it's not too late I may be able to help you out in the decision making!!

I've been to Morocco, loved it. Interesting place, fun to get about and nice waves. Lots of crooks on the beaches though so watch your stuff/leave it at the hotel.

I have been to the Canaries lots, mostly to Fuerteventura. This is where I'd recommend going as it is pretty much 'surf sure'. It does get windy but the wind is like clockwork so was easy to surf around. Normal day was wake up early, surf the West coast till 10.30am, this is when the wind starts. Lazy mid day eating and chilling. Surf the Northern track mid afternoon onwards (mid the urchins and lava rock, both can cut you up pretty quickly!) Then surf the afternoon/evening on the East coast, Glass/Flag beach was the easiest to get to.

I normally ride a longboard and as such have had some major beatings by the ocean here. I would recommend a performance mal if you ride them, or a shortboard with some drive in it. The waves are steep and powerful, but that's why we go there :-)

I have also been to Portugal and travelled North to South, but had a shocking time surf wise, so can't really give a fair report on it, needless to say that it can be good there (so I'm told)

Good luck, have fun.
