Eye care in the surf

Postby 954worldexplorer » Sun Mar 15, 2015 11:26 pm

I keep losing sunglasses in the surf, but whenever I don't wear any, my eyes get red and sting and I end up with blurry vision for a few hours. What is the solution???

Why not pick up something like this with a strap across the back?
Its just you and the heart beat of the earth, that moment when u take the drop nothing else matters your mind is completely free of all material thought processes. Your human.

what is causing the problem? Sun, sunscreen, saltwater, wind? Existing eye problems?

I only ask because I get no eye problems, apart from stupid sunscreen... and I suffer from surfing on the east coast of Australia, so spending a lot of my time peering straight into the rising sun

You can try a surf hat/cap if its sun related. Water - keep your eyes closed.

Barz have a range of Surfing sunglasses both optical prescription and polarized , Gerry Lopez wears optical sunnies for prolonged period in the tropic sun. The glasses have a neck strap an vents to stop fogging..
Pterygiu m s and other eye problems can result from surf and sun exposure .take care

954,
when learning to surf on one particularly bright day, I became snow blind. The severe pounding headache that accompanied this was more annoying than the blindness. From then on, I wore prescription sunglasses in the surf. Recently, I began wearing contact lenses and got some non-prescription sunglasses for the water.

The primary criteria for keeping sunglasses on your head & not lost to the sea is a tight, non-stretching strap. Here are examples of what I use:

Before discovering sunglasses like above, I began using my soccer (football) prescription sunglasses. They have an elastic strap. The elastic didn't keep them on my head in moderate to big wipe outs. This is the glasses I'm talking about and mine have black polarized lenses: http://eyeglasses.go-optic.com/store/ey ... p?id=22811

To combat fogging, I use these diver's products:

I leave for Hawaii tonight. I'd made sure to bring these glasses with me. I had Lasik surgery on my eyes and want to protect my investment.
They look like normal sunglasses but have padding that makes it float. They have a model that has black foam, but I chose the one with bright yellow to find it easy. The best thing is they don't look like surfing glasses or sports glasses with a strap going around the back.

They are polarized. If the grey is too dark for overcast conditions, they also make a lighter bronze lens.

These look interesting:
http://www.kurtisusa.com/surf-goggles/

The frame is completely flexible, they're lightweight, and float. They don't say whether the strap is elastic or non-elastic. They do say they are about $200 per pair (ouch!). The Seaspecs mentioned above by me can be purchased at a 3 for 2 price of $100. Fractionally, that means you're paying $33 per pair.

@peazz. Your signature is pretty epic! That's gotta be up there with Vin Diesels 'I only live my life one 1/4 mile at a time' haha :)

Back on topic though, some good eye suggestions here as I struggle with getting red and stingy eyes too
