I was wondering if i should get the 3d moon raker fins. They say its 15% faster than fcs 2 fins. Or Fcs 2 fins.

You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

Blunt answer, it is 14 days since you asked about your first board being a skater and all.
You get the speed out of the board not any fins until you can generate speed in your surfing. That 12% extra speed is just advertising hype. Fins are not bearing systems like on a skateboard.

Start surfing and get an understanding of what the reality of it is!

Baron mate I know what it feels like when you're just getting into surfing! It takes over your mind and you wanna tinker and play with your board and try everything. If you've got money to burn why not! Go make yourself happy, buy everything if you want, it won't make you a better surfer but sure if it makes you smile for a day knock yourself out!! :D

Seriously though, surfing is so much more than gear, it's 90% skill, experience and technique. The good can ride anything and the bad..well they often want to buy shortcuts. What's your first experience of surfing like and how are you finding it? We all love sharing our stories here. Welcome from a fellow noob! :)

Take those two fins , the FCS2 and the 3D moonraker fin, up to the top of a building. Hold one FCS2 fin in your right hand and the 3D moonraker in your left. Drop them over the railing at the exact same time. The fin that hits the ground first is faster.

Baron- I've sold skateboards longer than I've sold surfboards. Skateboard Bearings make a huge difference in speed. But Surfboard fins are more about turning. Where you can put your board on the wave determines your max speed. Any Skateboard/skateboarder can go "fast " by pointing downhill. Surfers need to work WITH the wave to generate speed.

The visible difference between a skilled surfer and a novice come intermediate ( whatever) is the amount of speed they can generate in their surfing in all sections of the wave. Pros are another level again.
Novices sort of basically flop along the wave intermediate might get speed from one or two sections etc all the way up the foodchain
I can overtake drop ins on short boards with my 9ft single fin at speed when they are bogging down on their own inability (Fancy fins or not).
I can follow them up a wave for a top turn and then drop faster down the wave and go with a bottom turn under them as the come down.
The simple answer is that I can generate more speed in each turn or position on the wave.
It is about using skill through the equipment not about the equipment providing skill, (never did never will).
There is no way to get those skill except by surfing, surfing and surfing.
