Looking for advice: new board, huge ding

Postby thestew42 » Tue Oct 28, 2014 5:18 am

So I've been surfing for about a year now, lurking on these forums for a while but this is my first post. It's been a great resource for me and I'm hoping you can help me out. I finally decided to go buy a new board yesterday and I took it out this morning for a couple hours. I didn't notice any issues until I got home tonight and took a look at it. There's a huge cracked ding by the fin box

I have made pressure dings on other boards before but never anything like this...seems like if it hit me I would have noticed but I guess it's possible. And I know I didn't hit any rocks or other people (empty beach break). Is it possible that the board was defective? Should I try to take it back or get it repaired? Is it fixable (considering the proximity to the fin box)? I'm still new to this, so just looking for any advice. Thanks.

What a bummer! Yeah sure any ding is repairable. My advice is to get a pro ding repair guy to fix it since it is a new board. If there wasn't some crack or something there prior then you hit something
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Look for a mark on the leading edge of your fin! :D not an equipment failure :!:
It is an impact ding , upward underwater meteorites? Sorry something has hit hard there!

The dings that look like that which I fixed, were usually done by the surfer's knee. But you would have remembered that impact ( and the sound ). That is not a defect, that is damage from impact. You said you didn't notice it until you got home. You mean to say you didn't rinse off your board after surf ? How did you transport it ? In a case, in the back of the pickup, strapped to the roof ?

By the way, do you have a little kid brother ?

You arent going to fix it yourself, so I guess if you take the board back and say 'what happened' the shop might be nice to you. But, yeah, its been hit by something solid and hit hard. Since its on the bottom could be a rock, or you banged it against a pole transporting it, or maybe you ran over a booger* and his hard head? :)

If its a 'cheap' board then the quality might not be great and it may not have taken a huge impact (but still a pretty solid one). I have an old (1990s) longboard that probably i couldnt crack if i tried - weighs a ton but is so well glassed and hand made quality. I have seen some of the cheaper boards that havent lasted all that well, a bit fragile. But its not a disaster, it just means you need to be extra careful.

Alright, well thanks for the advice everyone. I don't remember it hitting anything although I did take a couple rough falls so it's possible that's when it happened, I just don't remember getting hit that hard :) So I'll try to find a professional to repair it.

Yeah that's another reason it surprised me. I did rinse the board off and carry it home so I should have seen it.

Haha nope.
