i try to get around two session a day, between 1 1/2 - 3 hours- depends on how much waves there are and how exhausted i am. i started surfing 8 years ago. i visited indonesia 4 times, sri lanka, nicaragua, gran canaria and my next trip will be to maui. i really got better in sri lanka and nica cause i had a lot of waves and indo was allways very crowded and i tended to went to harder spots than i should have, cause i wanted to surf with my friends.

waikikikichan wrote:Can you post pics of you board for us to see. From what I can see on the video, your board is fine. The rider needs work. Like Duke Kahanamoku said " Ride the wave, not the board ". There's poor kids on the West side of Oahu surfing boards with only 2 of the 3 fins attached , nose torn off, buckled duct taped, but fully ripping.
Your Al Merrick Weirdo Ripper will be a very fun board and a good addition to your quiver. But just remember, your asking the salesman to sell ( or us to recommend you ) a Home Run bat.

the sales argument had me thinking as well, but i talked to a friend who is around my skilllevel and he switched from a 6.4 shortboard to 5.11 weirdo and was more than happy cause he said he catches more waves and its much easier to ride even though his decrease of length.

for a good surfer my board is def more than ok, but for a poor surfer as me a little better equipment def helps ;) i saw guys turning on longboards like it was nothing, but they surfed 4 times a week constantly. i try to get some pics , just have to find them...

Yeah, older design. But it not so much that it's an older design, but more that it's old. If the board is over 5 years old, then there's no more "Pop". The stringer doesn't have the Twang and the snap back response like before. I can see the FCS plugs. Are you using the solid black plastic FCS fins ?

the board is pretty old, bought it second hand 4 years ago so i guess its older than 5 years ;)

just recently got some FCS GMB-5 Pertformance Core - really nice fins :) at least i thought i felt a difference when i used them ( not in the video)

Tired and old as that board might be, its outline means it would be better in a more powerful, better shaped surf.
If the video shows the sort of waves you normally ride then a wider profile with volume increase would be better.
Do you need to go shorter? Maybe.........????

I am fully with you, I think it could be a setback as well to go shorter but that's a risk I wanna take.

In Maui it most certainly will be the opposite, I will be in the road trying to find easier waves which still have far more power and size than the ones in the video. I was just a little unlucky cause nica has very nice and strong waves as well. Also in Playa Santana I was lying more on the easier peaks cause the better ones were packed with really good surfers. Caught some great waves in the morning almost always alone for some time- i can really recommend going there!

Since your land locked, the best thing you can get to improve your surfing ( pumping, turns, flexibility ) is to get a Carver skateboard. Using that totally change my surfing especially in power and backside surfing.
Check Youtube for
CARVER 2011 style of riders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF1OZtUI3OM
and also this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSo97oLjb0k fast forward to 1:00.

Everyone I have recommended to get one , raves about how much better their cutbacks were the next session.

what about a normal skateboard or a snakeboard ? wouldnt have to buy those ? or is a carver really much better ?

Snakeboards are good in small tight spaces, but doesn't mimic surfing as well as Carver. Standard skateboards you can tic-tac lifting up the front trucks, but with Carver you drive the front trucks. Carving trucks like Gullwing's Sidewinders are good for traversing a hill side to side but it more longboardy. A close 2nd to the Carver is the Carve Board ( now known as Streetboardz ). The one with Pneumatic tires hold unreal on a steep hill. but pumping on the flats takes skill.

search for Monsta Carver ultimate surfing crosstrainer on youtube, the guy breaks down a good practice routine.

Can't find the video on YouTube... Just the one where he talks in general... But not really about a training routine
