Here is a video shoot at Noosa by a drone but it shows everything that worksin long board surfing, take off angled and otherwise, engaging the tail for nose riding, tube riding, great turns.
Simplest answer watch and see for yourself. Ask questions, I might be able to answer :D

what do you call a 'hang ten' when you are standing on one leg (1:33)?

Showing off!! I think I've truly hung ten. Once in all my years minus the years I rode short boards.
A hitch kick I think they're called, way outside my league!

I saw this video the other day and it made my heart ache. What I would give to be able to surf waves that good that well!

Beautiful, I'm definitely putting Noosa on my list for when I make it over to Oz.

Thank you for posting this Jaffa. The angle is brilliant to show how the tail (or sometime most of the board) is held in the wave.

I'm just starting to learn cross stepping properly. If I've stepped forward I can easily feel when I need to step back, but I'm struggling to tell when I've set my tail properly. Currently I just position the board as best I can, stall it then wait for it to feel stable before cross stepping forward. But I'm never sure if I have set things up correctly.

I think the major issue I have is that I rarely surf clean, predictable waves so opportunities to practice don't come regularly.

That is soo awesome, thanks for the post Jaffa.

I'd be ditching the short board in a second if we had waves like that consistently!

Sometimes I look at guys on their longboards, where the surf time per wave is longer than my total surf time per session, and wonder why I shortboard!
You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

Yeah I totally agree with you DBB! Even just going back to my 6'10 a couple of weeks back I was shocked at how much longer I got on some of the waves.

If only I was able to duck dive it as well as a short board when the waves are messy and dumpy i'd be long boarding everday!
Until then... I will just watch videos like this and be jealous

nice video, if only there were such waves at Wanda! I mean that Cronulla beach breaks look more suitable for shorter boards, so rare to see someone with a log there...

I saw this on surf life on my facebook feed, noosa is really a special place (and damn beautiful) shame it was not firing while I was visiting sunshine coast!

Sunshine coast has it all, sick left and right points, amazing sucky fast beach breaks that get real glassy in the evening and beautiful views, without a doubt one of the best places I visited.

Carb, make sure u do go mate, this particular break is set in noosa national park which in itself is worth the visit
Its just you and the heart beat of the earth, that moment when u take the drop nothing else matters your mind is completely free of all material thought processes. Your human.

I know you feel that way Roy about noseriding etc. and the inherent flaws of "malibus" , but your BLEF works really well as a fin for nose riding.
Actually locks the tail in even more, as well as being a great all round fin in bigger surf!
