Duck diving help please

Postby harrylawson7 » Wed Aug 13, 2014 10:24 pm

I have a 6'4" x 20 1/2" x 2 1/2" Quad fish, I am an intermediate surfer but am having trouble duck diving and I am wondering if it is my board, I am 9 stone and 5'6, with practice will it be possible to duck dive this board?

Yes - that should be possible, although it will involve good technique, and very good timing... but all duck-diving does.

If you're duckdiving something fishy, the wide front of the board can get caught by the drag of the wave, so it's important to get the board down good and deep early, and have the board horizontal as the wave passes over. You'll need to time it so that the 'scoop' (as you push the board forward and move from pointing down to pointing up) coincides with the most powerful section of the wave.

Practise practise practise...
You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent. If you practice something in the wrong manner, you will just get "better" at doing wrong. First you need to figure out whats wrong. Board shoots out the back between your legs, waves crashes on your neck, board wiggles out to the side ? Could you let us know what is happening during your duck dive attempts.

I am 5'2" at a 120 lbs. and have a board exactly the same dimensions but molded epoxy, so its might be even more buoyant than yours. I can easily duck dive it.

question: are you using your knee or ball of the foot to sink the tail ?
