Chafing from wetsuit

Postby BaNZ » Tue Aug 19, 2014 7:22 am

I don't surf as much as I do now due to location and when I do surf I stay in the water for a long time.

This is the wetsuit I got. http://www.surfdome.com/billabong_wetsuits_-_billabong_foil...78169

I get chafing on my neck. I also got another wetsuit, it's not as tight on the neck part but it still gives me chafing.

Any idea how I can combat this? I used to use vaseline during summer on my balls but that was with shorts.... not sure if vaseline is good with wetsuit.

Vaseline dissolves wetsuits and condoms, different risks though!

baby dolphin fat is good stuff, will prevent chafing no problems. Hard to track down but you are in NZ so just ask around

ok, chafing is a fairly common issue in triathlons, so there are some home made recipies and some commercial products favoured by those guys; if you want to do some research have a look at tri forums.

Home made is mostly lanolin (sheep fat). Assuming there arent too many sharks around (and notice I avoided NZ and sheep jokes...). Some make up a mix of lanolin and vaseline but petroleum based products are highly unrecommended as jaffa said. So you can try lanolin

Commercial products include bag balm (which is mostly lanolin anyway), bodyglide, triglide and a few others. Triglide seems to get the best reviews (search 'tri glide anti chafe' or you will end up with a lot of motorcycles)

A simpler option (and my suggestion) is a short sleeve high neck rash vest worn under the wetsuit. Might look a bit weird but whatever. Or maybe a 'skins' style compression shirt, which might fit a bit better under the wetsuit. No need for a thermal vest.

I'm from UK and not NZ!

Are lipsticks made from the same stuff as vaseline? I could try that on my neck?

I already wear a rash vest underneath my wetsuit but I still get chafing. I start getting it after I've been in the water for over 2 hours.

Be very careful BaNZ songs have been written about just such a situation!
Don't do anything rash!

Seriously rinse both the wetsuit and rashy with warm water.
Do not use any petroleum products.
