Where to go in Portugal?

Postby BB-GLACK » Wed Jan 08, 2014 2:22 pm

Hi Everybody,

So its that time again and I'm looking at where to go for some sun and surf in May. We have decided to try Portugal this time and I'm just hoping to get some advice on which area would be best to stay. I'm hoping to get somewhere close too surf but also in a nice enough resort as my wife and baby will be with me too so will most likely be doing my surfing early mornings and the rest of the day spent doing various non surfing activities :) . I would be intermediate level surfing and would prefer some fun breaks and nothing too gnarly.
From reading up Peniche/Belael seems to be the best option for surf but I'm reading that the area is not that nice if not surfing? Also from looking at websites accommodation seems a bit limited too, seems to be very few apartments with nice pools etc.
Would Ericera or one of the Lisbon areas such as Cascais or Estoril be a better location to stay for non surfing time? Or would further south towards Sagres have as good quality surf options?

Any opinions or experiences would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks
BB-GLACK

Hi,

I love Portugal too but Baleal/ Peniche is super crowded. Check out this webpage: http://www.wavesisters.com/de/surfcamp- ... lside-haus This House is near Lisbon and the owners worked hard to make it super comfortable for surfers and family. WaveSisters is a Girls surfcamp but the sure will help you out. In the area are a lot of waves and a lot to see. The castle's of Sintra for example and Lisbon is super close by. I hope this helps you.

Enjoy your holiday

Its true that Peniche/Baleal dosnt have much apart from surf. Sagres is nice but its also a really small palce with not much to do unless your willing to travel across Algarve.

Lisbon or the Cascais coast would be your best option, theres a ton of stuff to do (Capital city of Portugal & the amazin town of Cascais). You can surf at several different beach breaks, and if you just check the swell forecast on Magicseaweed.com, you can check which beach is best for your level on that particular day... I live in Lisbon and the surf is really good here, and the climate is warm, and May is the month that it really warms up.

For small/Medium/beginner waves in May, the best option is praia carcavelos. See http://www.biglisboa.com for info about surfing around lisbon.

Enjoy your trip!!

Hi!
In May still is a good time to surf around Lisboa. In the summer it's much crowded.
At Ride351 we have some Surf Trips that you can easily book in packages with all included or a Personalized version where you can choose what you want and where you want to surf.

We advise the Central Coast (Cascais, Ericeira and Peniche) or South Coast (Sines, Vila Nova de Milfontes and Aljezur). Let us know more details for we can customize a Surf Trip to you.

All the best and good waves!
