Question about hawaii

Postby TheFNG » Thu Mar 06, 2014 2:57 pm

First off, as my new would indicate, I'm new, my friends been teachings me on a board that's 6'6" I believe (if not it's close) in Rhode Island on watch hill, I'm buying that board soon. i plan on going to Hawaii for graduation in late June, hopefully with my board, were going to Oahu 5 minutes walk from the beach. Where would be some good places to surf, obviously I've heard a lot about Hawaii and while It be great to surf pipeline, I don't think I'll be ready for that, thoughts?

If you will be in Waikiki then that would be a good spot depending on the waves. There are several breaks and if there are waves you should be able to find a break that isn't insanely crowded. It's summer time so should be some waves on that side. Around the corner form Waikiki is Diamondhead and that used to be a great shortboarding place. Here is a map with the breaks on it.

So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

You have a ton of breaks in Waiks, Threes, Canoes, Bowls. and summertime is the heaviest on the south shore of Oahu. Also just for your information, the waves in Hawaii are extremely heavy compared to mainland waves because of its prime location in storm country and its ability to catch swell. so be careful. The south shore is also extremely territorial, I suggest you stay away from the hot spots and go out to diamond head which is a bit of a drive but its better then getting beat up since I'm assuming you don't have much experience surfing a wave like that. for example look up "ala moana bowls" in youtube and you'll see some of the sickest a frame tubes.
