San Diego Surf Spots to learn to shortboard

Postby surfero93 » Sat Mar 01, 2014 4:45 pm

I am a relatively new surfer, I started on a foam board and then surfed for a little bit on a 7' 6'' or so board and have had a fun time on it but would like to move into short/fish board (havent decided). I am in good physical condition and im 20 years old.

I will be working in San Diego this Summer and was wondering where the best beaches/coves/etc. are for me to get in and just practice practice practice. I am planning on surfing every day and would love anyone with knowledge or someone who lives in SD to point me to the best places where I can learn to shortboard/fish and not be a nuisance to good surfers while at the same time not being stuck in the touristy, slow fat waves that would be less than ideal for short boarding(from what I understand).

Thanks!

Tourmaline or Scrips pier, Tourmaline is a small wave that goes rights and lefts and so it is supper fun, but if the surf report says less than 3 ft then don't go because the wave is so slow that it won't take a small board if it it's less than 3 ft, also you have to go in the morning because it gets blown out at 2 pm.

Scrips doesn't have nice shape but the beach is long and there are many spots, mostly small peaks and mushy but many many waves. Those 2, you need nothing more. Scrips works even at 2 ft and is not that sensible to getting blown out.

What I also love about San Diego is the water quality, I used to get water for my reef tank from Scrips even after a rain and did tests on it and it was impeccable.
