Flash your knowledge!!

Postby cwall » Sat Feb 01, 2014 3:52 am

Dear Surf Hive-Mind,

Socal local contemplating a surf trip. I've got two months this summer and want to get tropical. Sick of my wetsuit. Had a guy come into the bar I work at and talk up Fiji. He was raving about this 300 yard point break he surfed everyday that was super mellow. Didn't sound like Fiji to me, but the seed has been planted..........

I've been surfing for about a year. Started on a longboard and still haven't bothered moving down--I love to cruise. Looking for something tropical and mellow; for me paradise is a waist/head high point right that runs for 500 yards. Just spent the summer getting cursed at and snaked by Miki Dora and company at Malibu (just like Surfline says) so want to avoid the crowd and don't have a ton of cash to drop.

Is this a ridiculous wish list or what?
Why have the Goons come? What has angered them so?

Bzzzzz
cwall, hate to tell you this Miki Dora is dead, Chumash is only a slogan on a wall now and 300 metre long waves as right handers in Fiji are unknown to me.
The cost of airfare and the Fijian economy and resort only style living would rip your budget to shreds easily.
I would suggest central America and maybe the top of South America. plenty to find read up look at the forums surf spot pages and quite a few posters here are from that part of the world read through old topics.
Surf stories expand by the number of drinks you served the guys big noting ego!

Thanks, Jaff.

I was quoting that Surfline article on Malibu. Left out the key word "descendants". Just for fun I googled the guy and found this quote:

When asked about surfing for prize money he responded:
"I ride for my pleasure only: no thanks. Professionalism will be completely destructive to any control an individual has over the sport at present. The organizers will call the shots, collect the profits, while the waverider does all the labor and receives little. Also, since surfing's alliance with the decadent big-business interests is designed only as a temporary damper to complete fiscal collapse, the completion of such a partnership will serve only to accelerate the art's demise. A surfer should think carefully before selling his being to these "people”, since he's signing his own death warrant as a personal entity."

Holy crap. Eloquent and very radical. Not sure if I agree, but the man could turn a phrase, no?

Anyways.....I found a ticket to Fuji for about 1,000 US, which I could swing. I'm also finding some relatively cheap rooms on the main island near Nadi and Sigatoka. There are a few places advertising "dorm style" or "surf camp style" rooms. Also, AirBnB has rooms down to 20$ or 30$ a night.

The problem is I'd still have to figure out how to get to the breaks.

Natadola and Sigatoka look accessible. Every surf these beachers, Jaff?

Also, Nomatura lefts keeps popping up as a good "longboarders wave when small."
Why have the Goons come? What has angered them so?

Just quickly crank up your google earth, you can stay in the surf club at Sigatoka, for a fairly cheap rate with meals provided or in the nearby village. surf is a long rivermouth wave.
Natandola has surf, super shallow reefs , not really a surf spot sort of mushy but every can have its day.
There is acccessible surf at Hideaways and along the coral coast, be prepared to give some dollars to the local chief to park at any spot or on the cora coast pay to park in hotel car park.
Namotu may be the place you are thinking of but you need a boat ride maybe out from Moni shea shell cove, once you head out by boat take your A game. Namotu is a great longboard wave there are also rights and other great breaks. The whole set up is different now that territorial rights to reefs have been set aside.
Fiji is under military law.
The people are brilliant your dollars are welcome, and homestay Bures would really get you in Island mode.
