Depending on swell you should not have to travel that far mate, looking at the map it seems plymouth is quite protected so off the bat will say you need a south swell with ne / n / nw winds.

For something more consistent through the winter months you can try most of Newquay's beachs, Bournemouth, sennan cove etc.

Magic sea weed has alot of the popular breaks documented for you to check out
Its just you and the heart beat of the earth, that moment when u take the drop nothing else matters your mind is completely free of all material thought processes. Your human.

Plymouth is one of the best areas to surf in the UK, you'll get consistent surf from the Atlantic, peazz is right newquay is decent just check out magicseaweed, plenty of spots in Cornwall or if your feeling brave you can tackle the cold of the northeast/Scotland!

I live in Plymouth, you'll have a blast, surfable beaches are Bantham and Bigbury (about 30miles), Witsand and Wembury (5miles), Bude and Widemouth (38miles on north coast). Newquay is ok; just very very busy and usually not worth the effort in summer. Hope you enjoy it!
