Need ding repair advice

Postby pmak » Sun Jan 05, 2014 7:52 pm

Hi all,
I am new to this forum and I am seeking advice on how to repair a few dings on an old short board that I just picked up. I have fixed small punctures before with suncure on my other boards, but I never made any repairs with resin and cloth. I would like to make a more permanent fix with this board. I have a ding repair kit with polysester resin, hardener, and q-cell. If anyone can offer advice on how to tackle these repairs, I would greatly appreciate it.

Ding #1 is shattered with and the cloth is exposed, but is not punctured.
Ding #2 is on the rail underside ding 1. The cloth is showing but the resin
isn't cracked. The surface is really rough.
#3 are two long cracks going across the bottom coming from ding2. They catch my fingernail.
Ding #4, the nose is chipped pretty good. Some resin is separating and the stringer is
exposed.

Thanks.

Either way you have got shot of work ahead of you. Myself that would probably take me a good few hours just to sand down and fill

The board was cheap, however I wasn't told about the nose. It had a nose guard covering the damage. I think I may get that part repaired professionally, but I would like to at least tackle the two other dings and cracks. I just don't know how to go about it. Referring to ding #1 -Do I try to cut out the cracked resin with a razor then sand to create a void to fill? Or do I just sand over the whole ding and surrounding area and apply resin and a couple pieces of cloth? And how far do you sand into the old cloth? Also, how would you go about fixing the big cracks on the bottom? Do I need to cut a groove to fill them or can I just sand over it and apply a coat of resin?
Thanks.

It honestly depends on the depth of the crank if it's gone to the glass chances are cut it out, sand, fill, glass, sand until smooth. Just go on YouTube and look it up.

Unless you are experienced with fiber glass, just pay the $50 and get it done by a professional. It will get repaired correctly and you will get a longer useful life from the board.
