new experiences

Postby greg2935 » Tue Oct 08, 2013 9:15 pm

I've always been a longboarder, (except when I first started and bought a cheap shortboard with a rocker so big the board tip could almost poke your eye out). Well that did not last long and Ive been longboarding for about 4-5 years now and loved it.

This summer we had some fantastic sets but, we also had some pretty strong winds too. For the first time I found I could not catch green waves early because the wind was lifting the front of the board and pushing me backwards, which probably has something to do with gaining experience and now being able to tell the difference. It started to get a little frustrating and someone mentioned buying one of the firewire addvance boards.

He described it as a fish with float. Anyway, I saw a good deal and got one. I am completely hopeless on this thing! It took about 5 mins to work out how to sit on it as it has a propensity to turn. I got really confused because there was not 3' of PU in front of me and the whole thing seems really skatey and feels so completely different it might be a completely different sport...and I'm having a blast!

Its just like learning t o surf all over again. I even had to go back to the white water just to work out how to pop up. Really did not expect it to be such a different experience and I have to say its alot of fun.

So for me, dropping from 9' to 6'10'' has so far been a good experience even if I'm hopeless.

Well, firewire doesn't make any floaty boards that I know of, so you are probably taking a big step down evcen at 6'8, which means you will be able to ride shorter board when you are done learning that one. I am glad that you are having a good experience, you will love the new board

The Addvance is something like 3+inches thick, so its probably pretty floaty. I imagine the narrower nose (in comparison to a mal wide nose) probably affects how sensitive you notice the board being eg when sitting (just think about how less stable something it suspended between two points in comparison to being suspended between some flat areas)

Its pretty thick, volume is 56.9L (my 901 longboard is about 75L) , 6' 10" by 22 5/8" by 3 1/16". Its a bit strange because all the "float" is in the middle of the board and thins out pretty quickly at the edge. I'd love to go out this weekend but its looking pretty flat :(
