I like the SPERLAAASH one - you can just see Jaffa nosediving

How deep was it at this break?

One thing that has helped me on small, weak days when it is hard to paddle at much of an angle and still catch the wave:

Catch the wave more or less straight-on. Then once you have caught the wave but BEFORE you pop up, arch your back and grab the rails, leaning onto one rail so the board starts angling in the direction you want to go. Then bring your feet under you to complete the pop up. In other words, start to dig the rail into the face before you complete the pop up. Only takes a second and that way you get the board angling across the face before the pop up is complete.

Does using the Costco foam board cause any problems going down the line for these size waves?

According to the picture here, I assume not:

Surfing is not about standing up.
It's about the board - moving on the wave.
Standing up just happens to help.

To add to tony's comment, if you look where you want to go across the wave (as you arch your back), not just with your head turned at the neck but with your shoulders also a bit turned (if that makes sense), then that will help you twist the board around.

I should say that the longer your board the less able you are to do the 'twist the board before pop up' just because there is much more of the board already buried in (stuck in) the wave and its just harder to move. You still can but not as easily as a shortboard.

here is a video plucked at random, if you watch at 0.38 and 1.10 you can see some take offs with the back arched a bit and looking down the line and setting the board across the wave during the pop up - but if you watch any surfing video you will generally see the same thing

Thanks Jaffa, really well explained, the sequence of photos really help visualise that it's not much of a turn!! Would love to get on that wave.

Can we have more pics to help out us struggling groms?! Really helps.
