Skateboarding when not surfing

Postby Atroxunus » Tue Jul 16, 2013 9:31 pm

So I skate when i dont surf i have a shortboard and a cheap sector 9 carving longboard. Who else if they get out ot late or just cant make it out that day turn to skating to relax and or improve your surf? Also if you use it to make your surfing better how do you practice on a board to make yourself better?

I found out that when I skateboard I'm goofy-footed in relation to surfing, that is, I can only push myself if my right foot is forward.
Is that normal?

I've been skating to improve my balance and SUP surfing. I have a Carver Greenroom and I noticed a definite improvement in my core strength and rail-to-rail transitions to generate speed. I skate regular foot like I surf but I have been switching on the skateboard to improve my balance. I just recently took up surfing (last week) and can't pop up yet so we'll see if it helps!

Not being able to surf all year round, I am thinking of looking into buying a longboard! I have no idea how to use one, but I will figure out how! :D

A lot more - gear up - helmet, elbow/knee pads, and wrist protectors...

I also skateboard, but I find that it isn't really practice for surfing...other than making your legs stronger..and maybe carving cement pool walls....

But it's fun to have a consistent "wave" though.....

I do both but not to improve one through the other. They're both so much fun and relaxing. I can ride a bowl all day long and though it is similar to surfing I rarely think of it that way. Definitely agree on the hitting concrete part! Not too cool.

If you are looking for a crossover benefit I'd say get both a longboard and a regular skateboard. Normal skateboards can make a bowl feel like you're riding a short thruster--snapping on the banks instead of just carving, and the airs are pretty similar feeling. Lot's of modern surfing is inspired by skateramps and bowls. Longboard skateboards feel like longboard surfboards....meh. But I guess anything standing and going forward is damn fun!
