Surf trip through Western Europe help needed

Postby dingleberry » Sat Jun 19, 2010 9:28 pm

Hi all,

I'm planning a surf trip through Western Europe, heading from the Netherlands and will be starting in Northern/Southern France and then heading around through Spain and Portugal. Want to hit some decent beaches a long the way so though I'd ask around and see if anyone's done something similar and has some good advice. Will be looking for some mellow breaks, beginner/ Intermediate type stuff and more than likely camping/staying in cheap motels along the way. Any advice will be helpful :)

Thanks in advance all!! :D

Ant.!

Hi!

There are surfcamps in some of the best surf spots in Portugal. They're actually quite cheap accommodation and you can also choose some other packs like surf lessons or a surfari (guided tour to the best spots).
<edit>
They run several surfcamps along the coast.

in portugal definately hit Peniche, an hour outside lisbon and also lagos in the algarve, plenty of begginner/intermidiate breaks around those areas. peniche is probably the more beginner friendly area.

Hey!

Last year I did a surftrip and I first went to Portugal, Spain and France with StokeTravel, it was f*cking amazing!
The waves were perfect for beginning and experienced surfers. I had the time of my life! Also because I went with a lot of people from all over the world, who all went with StokeTravel.. This summer I will definately go again to San Sebastian in Spain :D love it there!!!

Hasta Luegooooo! See y'all there!!!

I've done similar trips to this in the last couple of years. To start with it cant hurt to get hold of a copy of the stormrider guide for europe. I dont know much about Northern France other than there is a break suitable for everyone at La Torche in Brittany.

For South West France it might be best to stay away from the famous spots like Hossegor and Biarritz if you are not that experienced as these become very crowded with very talented surfers in summer. As the coast here is straight for hundreds of miles its easy to find similar quality waves without the massive crowds pulled here. Les Landes is an excellent region for this. The coast here is pretty much one long beach break from. Oh and you have to get up early for offshore breezes in summer. If its sunny and warm the whole time you get a sea breeze in the afternoon which ruins the surf.

Last year we went out to Northeren Spain because the forecast was pants in France. Its mountainous and it rains a lot. The waves were great and not hugely crowded away from the big Cities. We Found great spots in the Galicia and Asturias regions though camping here was pretty hardy due to the odd torrential downpour and its a bit of a mission to drive there. Also the local weather conditions are much more of a determining factor in the waves here as its fairly exposed to atlantic weather systems.

I cant remember too much about the specific beaches we surfed at but these areas have plenty of waves to find. I dont know anything about Portugal other than the names of the regions.
