Dolphin hazard?

Postby kookabout » Mon Jun 24, 2013 1:31 am

I just returned from a surf trip near Jax Beach FL. I surfed a few days at Hugenot Park, aka the north jetty. While there I did not notice much sea life. At one instance though, I was near the jetty and went to paddle for a wave when all of a sudden something from below hit the bottom of my board fairly hard. Needless to say it did freak me out a bit, lol. I never saw anything immediately, but I paddled in and when I looked back from the beach I did see a dolphin fin not too far from where I was in the water.
Im curious to know if anyone else here has experienced something like this? I don't know if the possible dolphin was getting out of my way and its tail hit my board, or if it was something else. Needless to say it was a strange experience to me.

I've been around dolfins many times, I can guarantee you it would take the most retarded dolfin to run into you, they are smarter and faster than you think (nothing against retarded people in case one of you are reading this)

kookabout,
sometimes sea lions and seals will watch surfers from within 1 meter. They are known to make contact, too. Once in a blue moon, a surfer gets bit by one. It's like a dog bite. Personally, I've had young sea lions brush up against my legs near a rock reef in NorCAL. He made such thorough contact with me that I felt his ribs - twice. A little bit spooky. I've also had sea otters pop up from the subsurface right in my face when laying prone on the board. They are funny little guys.

I've never had a dolphin make contact with me, but they have leapt from the water very close to me. It is marvelous and reminds you about your own vulnerability in the sea.

If a dolphin bumps you he did it on Porpoise. Our delphinic friends enjoy surfing around us, they are not necessarily tame , but they are curious and interested. There have been attacks on ssurfers and swimmers but there have been definite reasons, calves, or dumb behaviour by the human.
They are smart enough that if you were to be targeted it would be a total attack.
You will if you are lucky, share many moments with dolphins and maybe even whales :D
