Have you ever thought of sticking with one of the boards you like and mastering it. I get the different board for different conditions but c'mon unless you are on the CT a few different dimensions on a board make no difference to the average surfer. Not busting your balls or anything but seems like you are chasing the 5'2"X18X2" the guys on the CT are using thinking that's going to change how one surfs a wave. Trust me I get it- I love getting new boards as well - I am just saying that a new board isn't changing what's going on on a wave though it might change what's going on in your head.

I beg to differ have you ever tried to hit a bottom turn and hit a lip on a long board, much easier on a shortboard. If he wants to increase his stoke by getting new boards that are more ordinance oriented he may be able to find himself doing stuff he never could have on a fatter more buoyant board.

Good question, I guess I could use just one board, but why? If it's steep I like a board that can slot in perfectly, if it's mushy a board that can glide into the A frame easier, and if it's huge I have step up and a gun, depending on how huge, because you need to paddle harder to get ing. That and a longboard plus a loaner are my entire quiver.

So, could I use just one board? Sure. Could you use just one golf club? Probably. Could you use the same bike on or off road? Probably.

Lastly, to give you an example of why I like a variety of boards, today the waves where peaky and holloow, but because I have surfed so much my body is old and hurt, so I took out the fish so I could get into waves easier. Not the right purpose, but at my age it's nice to have that option.

And the wife thing: so every few weeks I take out $2O or $40, so in a couple of months I have enough for the down payment. She doesn't seem to mind that way, I'm sure she would if I took out $600 in one lump sum, but then again she won't be divorcing me any time soon. Besides, make up sex is cool, why not get a surfboard out of it!!! :D

Yeah yeah, I get it. I wasn't meaning one board in general rather one board for the different conditions. I myself have a 5 board quiver and I would like to change out a couple as I just moved to the Santa Cruz area from Hawaii and I think the wetsuit, flatter/slower waves and another year added to my age are reasons to exchange a few. Nonetheless I think you have probably bought and sold a few boards that were "keepers" if you would have put the time in on the boards. Again, not busting your balls and to each there own ..... just sayin it seems as though you are chasing something that's not there. FYI I called my shaper in Hawaii to produce one of my old boards that I gave away before moving to Ca so i will have 6 boards in my quiver by next month. I am 43 years old and every time I get a new board it's like XMAS morning for me when I was 7 years old.

A few years back I had a 6'3 made with a little more volume but good rails and 5 fin set up, it was my one board for all occassions. Well, it wasn't, the extra volume did not help in steep waves. Loved it for a while but ended up going back to my old boards.

I alawys get slack for this, but yes go buy a fish, a big one. The problem with going from a 9ft board to a shortboard is, well, the patience it takes to master it, so an inbetween board that will later work as your small wave board makes sence.

So yeah, a king fish, not a fish. Eventually you will learn that fishes are made to be way small an nible, but as a cheater beginner board a king fish is just as good as a funboard, though most don't agree with me but I'm sticking to that

Hey IB-Surfer

I've got a couple of questions- I've never tried an epoxy board but was interested reading about your experience with them.
One thing I was curious about is how it paddles better but can also duckdive better? I thought if it were more bouyant than a PU construction it would be harder to duckdive?

I guess similar to you, i've chopped and changed boards a hell of a lot this year and had a few questions about it too (gone through 7 different boards this year and only been surfing for 6 months total..) but hey, like your experiments i've found a similar result and more importantly, what works for me.
My 6'2 fish had similar dimensions to the first board you had made and paddled well but the rails were thick so didn't turn well and couldn't handle steep sections or much over 4ft. Found the same thing in experiementing with quad / thrister fin set ups that you found too.
I got a much more short-board style fish a month ago and have been loving it, similar to your second board- it is more narrow, slightly thinner and with thinned out / performance rails which have made a huge difference to my turning ability that I couldn't do previously on my other fish.
I guess my only complaint is that the board almost sits under the water when lying on it so paddling gets pretty relentless if the break is far out back. I do love that I can duckdive so deep with it though which is why your epoxy board and result really interests me?

If my new go-to board is 6'3 x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2 and I were to get it made in epoxy like yours, would I change the dimensions or leave them as is?

Cheers

This thread hit a nerve with me. I suffer from a related condition. I'm addicted to buying new tennis rackets. I must have gotten 20-25 over the last five years.. I'm pretty sure I'd be just as well off on the court with number 5 as with number 25. But like the other guy also said, it feels like christmas morning when a new frame arrives...feels just like you're a kid again. New sports gear is the best.

In one way tennis racket acquisition addiction (TRAA) is even worse than alarming board hoarding disorder (ABHD) since you really need two of every model in case your strings snap during a match, but fortunately the cost per unit is much lower. It's also fortunate I suppose that I'm a much better tennis player than surfer and spend more time on tennis. Otherwise I'd probably be broke..

Good but don’t forget about surfing board cover. A good quality cover will help you to protect your surfboard from any type of damage.
