Hi,
I lived in PNG for a while, never taken anti-malaria medication there (but got malaria in Indo on a trip). Vanimo is a great trip. Very popular with the Japanese (sometimes they hold surf comps there), other than that not very busy, quite basic accommodation, doesn't get over 4-6 ft but clean and empty. Andy Abel from PNG Surf Association is super nice and able to help you with any info you might need. He was the one introducing surfing to PNG (after having been to boarding school on the Sunshine Coast in his teens). PNG surf is nothing like Indo's much heavier waves. Very playful and fun though.

Hi,
You have probably seen this already, but this is the Surf Association's (Andy Abel's) web page.
The surf you see here is pretty much standard for Vanimo. Nothing too big, just nice, easy and fun waves. I am envious (as we probably all are). Enjoy. Next time look at Nusa Island in Kavieng, that is a nice place with a capped numbers of surfers, I preferred it a little to Vanimo, as you are on your own island and it's more 'tropical' and feels more 'island paradisish ' (like the South Pacific). I also liked the waves a little better as you surf in the middle of nowhere. Don't get me wrong Vanimo is fantastic but if you like PNG, that might be your next trip!
