Are the waves any good In April? Or is it a bit hit and miss at the beginning of the season?

Hi, I've some question for you:
1- is it a safe place to go, if you leave your girlfriend on the beach while you're surfing? (For exemple, I love Bali for this reason too)
2- I've read that the spots are always over-crowded and the locals aggro. Is it true?
3- Is the water clear or dirty?

Thank's

Hey,
I am a female surfer and I hated Arugam Bay. I would never go back. It was full of super aggro locals, Israelis and Euro surf kooks (April/May). The Point was insanely crowded and the other waves weren't all that spectacular. Give me Indo any day. For females (who dont want to hook with locals), it is a nightmare. I had guys xxxxx off behind palm trees when you walked past (in shorts and a rashie) and you had peeping toms everywhere. I was there for the waves. For a non-surfing female it would be a nightmare. Just my humble opinion.
The Isralis are not allowed to get into Indo, so they go there. If you can surf Indo, I wouldn't bother.
It's been on my list of places to surf for years and it wasn't worth it. I actually enjoyed the southern side of Sri Lanka a lot more (waves and people).
Safety: we heard gunfire at night and there were soldiers everywhere. This was in 2007 and 2011. Been there twice.
