Postby kamcateer » Tue Feb 26, 2013 6:52 pm

Hi im looking at going to North america for the summer next year for a work abroad programme (i live in the UK) basically i was wondering where would be a good place to stay? near consistent summer surf spots, not to busyand whatnot, preferably warm ? haha

not a massive fan of hussle and bussle although would like to be near a city to visit.
hoping to get a job in a surf shop or in a surfing village.
3 foot waves are ideal as i dont have THAT much experience :L

might have been too specific, but yeah, really need some help because North America is one mother-lickin' big place haha

You want warm, try Socal and Florida, your work abroad program might not cover those places but being northern hemisphere summer all of the States are in summer too! So crowds along the coast.
You want consistent summer surf spots, so do the millions of others if there is a surf shop or a surfing village there will be a crowd ( they're there to get the business).
Having said that there are beaches that are considered learners' beaches and are cool to go to!
Maybe our USA crew will advise you. Good luck have fun :D

I'm sure such a place exists somewhere.

If you want consistent surf in the summer, CA is your best bet in the US. I would try to find one of the smaller towns near LA or San Diego. As you get north of LA the water gets cold pretty fast. There are plenty of places to surf on the East Coast but the flat spells are more frequent. Many (probably most) US beaches are very crowded in the summer. Getting a job in a surf shop is very unlikely. That's a hard job for locals to get. Plus if the surf gets good, as the new person you'll be the one stuck in the shop!

The problem in San Diego is that the waves tend to be small in the summer. The further north you go, the better the summer surf. You may get away with Oceanside, which is the north part of San Diego and gets southern swell. That being said, for your surfing level, San Diego may be good. You're looking at an average 1-3 feet in the summer. In San Diego, you can also make day trips across the border to Baja (if your visa permits it), which I do from time to time.

If crowds and avoiding big cities is more important, then southern California is out. The central coast is very chill and the people are really nice. No big crowds there and it gets all kinds of surf (beach breaks, point breaks, reef breaks). The problem is that the water is cold all year around and you're not going to get much of a summer. You'll need a coat or sweatshirt at night, even in the summer.

If you still want to try San Diego, take a look at Encinitas. Good surf community and plenty of surf shops. Don't know if they're hiring. Good luck!
