When it comes to picking your first board I usually tell people to go longer, wider and thicker than they initially think. Obviously a longboard is usually a great choice for beginners in small waves but they can get annoying to maneuver and transport. Funboards or mini-longboards are a really good idea for a 1st board. 7'8" to 8' gives you enough glide to still paddle in early to reduce pearling and increase wave count. I would look for something 8'ish feet, around 21" wide and 2.5-3" thick. These kinds of boards are super easy to learn on, especially in small waves. Hope this helps a little. Cheers!
