SURF PALS

Postby ShAiNa ShArKbAiT » Tue May 31, 2005 2:10 am

Hey friends! I am looking for anyone in the northern cali area (preferably sacramento) who wants to hit up Half Moon Bay, Pacifica, and Santa Cruz on random day trips for surfing. I have always boogie boarded, but have decided to brave the cold and the sharks and learn how to surf up here in Nor Cal. I have family in Huntington Beach, so that is familiar beach to me, but this is a whole new experience. Is there any guys or gals interested? I posted this same Q on www.craigslist.com in the Sacramento "Purely Platonic" section that says "SURFING PALS" and has a pic. Lemme know! I am 24 by the way, and usually go on day trips with my boyfriend, brother or random friends, but they aren't always free when I am, hence this search :-)

Welcome to the forum ShAiNa,
gulfsurfer is being a little sarcastic - as I am sure you know Half Moon Bay can get pretty serious.

Are you making fun of me for being a texan??
If so, then do it all you like, i would rather live here then anywhere else. I dont have to fight crowds and put up with all the arseholes in california. People here have more stoke then anywhere else.

No I am not making fun of you gulfsurfer...I am sure surfing the gulf rocks...warm water at least- not the freezing water we deal with. Anyhoo, I just got on the defense. It seems like I mention Half Moon and everybody thinks I am gonna surf Mavericks or something!!! People, trust me, I have done my research and have found a few spots recommended for beginners. However, I do know most of the area is more advanced....so anyways, I hope to hear from anyone interested!!

Hurricane swells still arent as crowded as an average day at huntington or rincon or malibu or pretty much any spot over there. Texas has so much coastline that you dont have to surf right where everyone else it.

But yea, i think maybe they should open up a "hollister surf club" surf camp for beginners at half moon bay. Perfect spot to learn

Whilst all this sarcasm is amusing I have a little question.

Is the water in California really that cold? What kind of temperature are we talking?

It's just I've heard lots of people mention 'freezing water' in Cali and I was wondering how it compares to SW England - New Year's Day - Snowing - Water temp 2C (35F)?

Cheers

i've never been to norcal but everyone says its really cold. Southern california isnt as cold but you still have to wear a wetsuit most of the time.

it's cold if you aren't from there. Like... if it's a day with some swell most likeley there has been some west wind and the water drops a few degrees... Summer temp is around 65 or so and winter is usally around 50, but that's for socal. Norcal is usally like I duno... alot colder?

ha that's all I know about nor cal water, but I do know that washington durring summer is around 58 or so, so yea it's probally somewhere between those too.

Not cold compatred to you canadians, englishers, nova scotiaers, russians (but I have no idea when you're alloud to get a break from growing your rice to go surf), NE coast of US, and anywhere far north or south. It's all exageration from all us warm water people. I'll be surfing in my boardies durring the middle of winter where everyone else here is in their fullsuits, just what you've been aclimated to.
