Leash length

Postby pico_train » Thu Jan 03, 2013 3:17 pm

My 5'10 fish has what I think is a 6 foot leash. When bailing on it in larger waves, it has the potential and does occassionally come back in slingshot mode at my head with the back tail at a potential dangerous speed for my good looks. :-)

Would getting a longer leash help sort that out and save me a trip to the dentists'?

Yes it would, the longer your leash is the less chance of it taking you out on the rebound :-D
Keep in mind that the longer the leash is, the more drag it will create. Also, when you have come off your board, it will take longer to get back onto it.
A 6 foot leash on a 5'10 is a good length, but if you are worried about your good looks, you could probably get away with another foot.

are you using one of those thinner competition leashes? maybe get a thicker one that is less elastic. it wont rebound nearly as much.

Not to mention less painful when it wraps around your leg/ arm/ neck and gets pulled by the wave.

You might be onto something with the competition leash. Mine is quite elastic, will see what I can find out about it and compare with others at local surf shop.

Thanks!
