Right type of board for waves that are pulsing too fast?

Postby avillax » Fri Jan 04, 2013 1:14 am

Here in San Diego, sometimes waves come real fast, one immediately after another requiring real good physical conditioning.

Sometimes it gets frustrating when I just get too tired to reach the right spot, after fighting all the incoming waves pulsing too fast.

I was wondering which would be the best type of board?, less or more foam?
My Al Merrick Flyer has a lot of foam and it's a good paddler but because of this, it also gets a hard time cutting through incoming waves that have already crumbled (very San Diego-like), would it be easier to reach the break with a board with less foam (losing paddling power but gaining less resistance?) Haven't been able to try that in San Diego as I only own one board, I just did with shortboards that had way less foam here in Sayulita and they penetrate better because of less resistance thanks to less foam, but at the same time, the waves in Sayulita don't break nearly as fast nor pulsate extremely fast like in San Diego.

What do you think?

Try a different beach. For example, at Ocean Beach there is a nice easy channel next to the pier and if you like surfing avalanche I use the left jetty to get me half way out. Also, on big close out days I go to sunset cliffs where I can find easy channels.

Where do you surf? Maybe I can suggest something more, or somewhere different.
