Hi Brad,
if you choose Portugal we can recommend several surf zones. Peniche, Ericeira, Lisbon, Alentejo and Algarve and Westcoast North. If you are looking for the most consistent surf zones with more options between beachbreak, reef and pointbreaks the best is Ericeira (a world surfing reserve) and Peniche. The good thing is that they are small areas where everybody surely find a wave to his taste. Left, right, mushy, tubular, there is everything here. But it also more crowded. In the northern zone you can choose between Espinho, Póvoa, Aveiro, Figueira da Foz, Porto. But you'll have to do more kilometers along the coast. Lisbon is also a good option. You have spots as Costa da Caparica (15km beach), Carcavelos and Guincho as well as the area of Sintra with Praia Grande and Praia das Maças. But If you're looking for something more relaxed, more roots in touch with nature, with the most breathtaking scenery and less crowded then your place is definitely Alentejo and Algarve Westcoast. April is a great month for surfing, it's spring, the water begins to warm, the sky is almost always blue and sunny. The big winter swells begin to give way to more consistent waves with about 6 to 10 feet. Bring a 3/2 wetsuit and a lot of energy. You'll surf all day.
