Is this the right board for me?

Postby avillax » Sun Sep 23, 2012 6:56 pm

So after 6 intense months of surfing, I want to go to the next level "intermediate" and start surfing bigger waves for the winter season. (Chest - Head high here in San Diego California).

My old "egg" board was an excellent beginner board but it has trouble trying to surf steeper waves (it tends to pearl a lot) and not always can I grab them to the sides.

Thus, I'm looking for some kind of fish or fish-hybrid

So I read reviews on sharp eye's SBT-S :
http://www.sharpeyesurfboards.com/surfb ... rds/sbt-s/

And it's classified for small to - head high surf, having enough volume for good paddling and a good rocker to avoid pearling, which seems just right for me, plus here in SD I can buy them used for a really good price.

A guy is selling me one for $200 dlls. The only problem I see with it is that it is 6'4. It says on the previous link that this board comes in sizes 5'0" - 6'4" so my mentality is that the 6'4 is maybe designed for a bigger guy?. I'm 5'10 and weigh 155 lbs. The guy who is selling it said first that he was 175lbs and then he said he was 5'10 and weighted 165lbs and that it was "the lightest board he's got".

I'm a big skeptical, would the size be good for me?. Thanks.

At 155lbs u will be surfing much smaller boards, but at 6 months worth if experience you arent ready for small. In my humle opinion 6'4 is a great transition size for a begginer in your weight, with the understanding that you will be buying a shorter one next year.

BTW- I have a sharpeye and love it.

As to the wetsuit, I just got back from surfing up in morro bay, water was 55dgs and it was cold and overcast, the 4/3 with a regular rash guad and booties was fine.

Hi there, i have , with the help of many of you :D , finally made my decision. I WILL be buying a shortboard-despite the bad wave catchability and non-friendliness to beginners. I decided that ultimately this is the better way to go, and asked some of the guys down at my local shop, and they said they switched to shorter very earlier on , and it was really hard at first, but once you finally get it, its 10x the thrill you get on a longboard. So i decided that thrill was something i got once i felt surfing for the first time and 10 x that thrill is something i really REALLY want. And so, I found a place with some second hand cheap boards (dont care about quality, just want something to try out for a while) , and they have loads of options. I am 166cm tall, 50kg, and 12 years old. I am definately still beginner, but can ride open faced waves now. I need to know what kind of board - length, width, thickness, type- would make it the easiest to start on the shortboards. The waves where I am (South Africa, Cape Town) are fairly small on normal days, um usually around around like waist to chest height although im not really sure how to measure..
I have done my research and realise that shortboards are gonna be super hard if not impossible to catch waves with-IM UP FOR THE CHALLENGE :ninja: - but is there some sort of quality i should look for in these second hand boards that will help?

Also is there anything i should look out for like dings and things like that , which would make the board a very bad buy? And what height would be best for me? I was thinking maybe 6ft-6.4?
Pleaaase answer soon, Im desperate to get back into the waterrr! :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :surfing: :goingsurfing: :nerner:
