Sanding a repair...

Hi all,

So ive tackled the repairs, the first few were awful but the later ones ok. What im struggling to understand is how to sand them down properly.

So ive added 2 layers of cloth and resin in a taped area. Remove the tape and i have a nice 'raised patch' from my repair. If i try to sand the edges im inevitably going to take some layers of the board near the edge of the repair.

So, do i sand the arse out of the repair so it is flat with the board, then paint a bit of resin on and wet sand that. Or do i sand the repair down as best i can without sanding the original board and wet dry the edges making as minimal a bump as possible?

Help needed ASAP. Im driving to Sennen on friday and have about 8 patches to finish!

Personally when I'm doing a repair, I pre-sand the area around the ding down a bit, so that I won't end up with a raised repair. I'll be putting an extra layer of glassfibre back on it, which will bring up back up to the correct level. It'll still work ok your way though.

When you are blending your repair with the rest of the board, just go gently with the sandpaper around the edges. Obviously you want the edges to be blended smooth with the rest of the board, but you don't want to be eating through the original glassfibre. Inevitably you'll remove a little bit of the original material here, but keep it to a minimum. You're just aiming for a smooth transition between the repair and the board.

After that, just paint a thin layer of resin over the top of the whole sanded area, and then gently blend that in around the edges with smooth paper.

Don't sand the arse out of the raised repair to bring it down, otherwise you'll weaken it and maybe go right through to the original ding.
