£850 budget for a month, where to go?

Postby JoshSurf » Sun Aug 19, 2012 8:51 am

Hey guys,

So i have got £850 saved up from working and i have one month of potential surfing time to play with so i need your help!

My choices are to

a) find somewhere (from heathrow/london/bristol) in the world that will allow me to surf for one month with plane, food and shelter max 850

b) go crash at my mates in Costa Rica with the plane ticket totalling £850!

As you can see my dilemma i don't really want to shell out 850 for a plane ticket so if you can suggest somewhere in the world i can get a flight to, then stay dirt cheaply, that would be swell.

Sadly I think that you might be a little undergunned for a months trip anywhere out of the UK.
I suspect your only real chance is sofa surfing with somebody who is somewhere and dumpster diving to eat, not an option I'd relish :(

Ahh that's a shame.
If i only do 2-3 weeks, would you be able to suggest something then?

Thanks a bunch

Josh it's a little hard to give you real advice when I don't know the fare structures in the UK to Europe or elsewhere.
But the airfares will chew your funds to pieces and often cheapo airlines won't take surfboard or charge a motza>
I'd be looking at southern Spain or Portugal but then you have to find somewhere to stay which is the next biggest cost.
If you are on on a surf trip fueling yourself is important and you need travel insurance, a hospital trip due to injury or ill health and you will be in debt forever or just not able to afford treatment.
Save up plan ahead and look forward to the time of your surfing life, underfunded is a ride to disaster. You are working at below survival levels at the moment. NOT FUN at all :?

Haha got it, thanks jaffa.

They may be an opportunity for me to go to Nigran, Spain on the cheap. Not sure if you know it, but i asked for some info a couple months ago here, my friend has a villa so that's prob the best bet. Just need to find out if there is decent surf there.

More than have a trip, i was more looking to rent a small place near the beach, buy a second hand board and just surf right there every day! More chilled that way.

Get a mate that drives, tell him you'll pay for 1/2 fuel and all ferry costs, get a tent and 90 packs of super noodles and some vitamins and get your arse to west coast of Europe! Try a website called helpx, could help with accomadation and food

If I was you and wanted to have a trip that felt like I was abroad ( foreign language, sexy chicks :o) I'd get a tent and rucksack and board bag and get on train to France or a coach would be cheaper. That way you'll h e loads of excess money! I'm getting a camper in the next 2 months and that's where I'll be heading. I think £850 will be plenty for me to live on for a month inc ferry and fuel but I'll need a little more as I'll be heading down as far as Portugal.
Let me know where you end up, be curious to know wht it cost.

That almost sounds like a plan! Free wheeling the camping ground at Rodiles comes to mind!

Just checked that location! That is deffinately do able on that budget if your thrifty! There's a book that I'm looking to get that someone told me about on here, wave riders guide or something? I can't find the thread right now ( hope someone corrects me so I won't have to look again), it's a guide to different breaks in Europe. Could be a good read while your making your mind up??

The Low Pressure Group produce series of books, Stormrider Guide to Europe and other surf areas, it wouldn't surprise me if the Surfing Wave Shop sold it.
There is also and people forget it our very own maps! :D

that's the one Jaffa! I've literally just bought the app for iPhone Instead of the book after being directed there from magicseaweed! I'm jealous of you! I'm not leaving until November, starting in Perranporth and working my way south from there in my new van! Happy days!

That's the one! They have an app for iPhone too, I've just downloaded it and it looks really good with routes and distance calculator ( if you can get reception when abroad!)

I'm jealous that he's got a wallet full of cash and some time to burn now while I've got to wait 3 months!

Haha, it looks like 3 weeks camping/hostelling in france is the best bet, 18th sept to 7th oct, you guys know of where i can get the best info for the whole trip? I know literally nothing about french waves or travelling in france. I have done my fair share of travelling around indo, asia, oz so i am no newbie at it, let's say that :)
