Living in Syracuse, NY, I have been bodyboarding up on Lake Ontario's eastern end for the last 8 or 9 years. In that time, I have seen less than a dozen people out on surfboards. That's not to say that the surf isn't worth the trip. I think surfing is not the first thought that comes to mind and you generally have a short window of opportunity.

Winds out of any direction that includes west, at 12 knots will generated 3' beach break. If it is sustained for longer than 5 or 6 hours, the waves will build to 3-4'. 15 knots and the waves are a solid 3-5'.

They tend to be stacked on each other, period of no more than 3 seconds between. More often than not, they tend to be short in length and a bit choppy. If we have sustained winds from one predominant direction for more than 24 hours, the waves become nice and linear. There can be a strong rip and the waves come in very well defined sets.

I just took the plunge and bought a surfboard. I don't know why I've waited so long to get one.

Now I need a 6mil wetsuit, hood, gloves, boots for late fall/winter/spring. And, of course, other people to go with. And some wind would be nice!

Hi OldSol, welcome to Surfing Waves!

Thanks for the info, and congratulations on your new board. I don't envy you in those winter water conditions there. SW Lake Ontario meet anyone? :-D
