Finally the council does something for surfers!

Postby Jimi » Tue Jun 19, 2012 11:39 pm

This year the local council in Cronulla (Sutherland Shire) have been in contact with local and international surf experts regarding what to do with dredged sand from the local waterway's channels (Port Hacking).

Previously the sand was dumped close to the breakzone with the intention of restocking sand lost to storms, but little care was taken in location of the sand with regard to surfable waves. This year, however, the council has approved the formation of a sand 'slug' to act as a deepwater wave-focussing ridge. :woot:

This is not an artificial reef, and is in deep water (8m) that will not break in typical conditions, so it will purely affect the refraction of passing waves as they approach the beach.

Fingers crossed it turns out as the theory indicates!

But Cronulla already gets waves - can't they stick it at Coogee? :woot:

Actually the people involved in design are not ASR LTD but a Maroubra-resident led company called Surfing Ramps.

The 'contract' is with the dredging company and purely an ammendment to the sand dumping location.

don't worry SP, I read it and thought ... "oh crap. ASR gonna pull a number on us too?!" but it's not, so I big sigh of relief from me!
Fingers crossed it works anyway!
