Need some advice for a single fin

Postby jaktequila » Thu May 24, 2012 12:10 pm

Hi. I'm looking for a single fin for my 5'10 x 19'3/8 x 2'1/4 hybird shortboard. I'm about 67kg. I ride this board with a thruster set (FCS K2.1). Do you think it will work with a single fin? What type and size should I get? I've never surfed any single-fin surfboard in my life and would love to try!

All boards can work as a single fin, the turning arcs will be different, the paddling will be a little easier, rail to rail will different I imagine that you have plug rather than a centre box so get a slightly longer center fin Since you have FCS in have a look at the FCS HI-1 as a centre fin it's from a longboard thruster set up. Shapers fins also have some in their extra large range that may do the job, of one experiment will be to ride with the K2.7 fin and see what you think , in fact do that first.
Interesting time for you coming up

It's been a while, Uncle Jaffa.

I can assume that the style will be very different from the thruster. That will be fun. :D You think trying an XL size centre fin is a good idea? Too bad I don't have any of them around. However, Shapers Fins seems to have a wide range of longboard plug fins unlike FSC. I think I'll have a go with that. Thank you.

I wouldn't go to extremes I think something about 6" might do the job for the size of the board, you'll notice that both FCS and Shapers base the fin size for weight as part of a thruster or quad configuration so you need to have a little more in the lone centre fin, if you keep with the K2.7 as you first experiment you may find it won't hold on the turns so a little deeper is better.
Go too big and with all the turning force directed on one fin may pop the plugs ( it really is unknown territory, especially with the modern lighter glassing etc)
