Roofbox and surfboards

Postby surfncanoe » Tue May 08, 2012 8:10 pm

Hi all
Due to increase in family, I require a roofbox when I go away in a few weeks time.
Does anyone know of any surfboard carriers for cars that are upright as mu current carrier if for the surfboards flat and this won't fit next to my roofbox.
Help please
Ian

Have never seen anything that fits the bill here, but that's not to say that they don't exist. Bring your car with roof box and boards (maybe inside the car) to a fabricator/welder/engineering place. We use them a lot in work for specialized equipment stowage on our vehicles. They are often a lot cheaper than you may think, and usually find coming up with novel solutions a refreshing change from their usual work.

I'm assuming your roofbox attaches to a normal roofrack. Maybe they can bodge together a couple of upright brackets that fit on to each rung or your roof rack to attach your boards to. Good fabricators often astound me with the ingenious solutions they come up with.

Hi surfncanoe, welcome to Surfing Waves,

I've never seen anything like this that you can buy direct. You might be able to get you board flat alongside a small roof box, but no chance with a larger box.
I'd be interested to see any custom solution anyone has.

I don't know if a little trailer is an option, but you can then drill some holes into the top of the trailer or along the side of it, attach a piece that would suit holding standard board racks that can be attached to a cars "gutter" on the roof. It's a 2 in 1 solution. It's also probably a good longterm solution for you if your kids are young. The amount and size of stuff you cart with you as they get older will only increase.
