Pura Vida & Aloha spirit

Postby jonny » Sun May 08, 2005 6:16 pm

Anyone been to Costa Rica? They have a phrase there - PURA VIDA - literally translates to mean "pure life" but it doesn't really mean that.

It means whatever you want it to mean. It passes good karma. It means be happy, good life, enjoy. Hawaiians have a similar thing - Aloha. Really, it's ANYTHING. It can be passed on between complete strangers who just want to give a smile and some positive chi.

Wouldn't life be boring if everyone had the same views, liked the same things, dressed the same way, surfed the same surfboards even?

You have to embrace people who think different to you and enjoy it. That's what makes life fun.

No I am not stoned by the way - just felt this forum needed some Pura Vida.

:)

while hes on the topic of aloha and the aloha spirit, i jus thought id say that the 2 nicest people on the texas coast just had their daughter ashlyn pass away. Joel and lola were like the prime example of the aloha spirit. Her paddle out will be on sunday 5/22 at 47th, aka Jola's, aka LuLu's jetty.

thanks bro, this guy named colin (from oahu) paddled out to Queens, which was her favorite spot and left some traditional purple orchid leis and a piece of coral with a tag that had her name on it so she could always be there.

Colin's a great man to have done that. I've seen massive funerals at sea and it really touches all the surfers, regardless of whether you know the person or not. So far, there've been about 5 or 6 while I've been out and I surf at the break right next to Queens. Canoes and scores of huge boards get out there in a giant circle and toss leis in the water. Its a magnificent sight and a great way to remember someone.

Aloha!
