Yes the glare is damaging , but UV rays more so, a lot of surfers end with Pterygiums (a growth over the eye) which has to be surgically removed.
Things to do. Wear quality certified sunglasses with a UV rating , expensive is not necessarily the best, and fashion knock off and troll sunglasses may even be a cause of eye damage if they don't have the proper lenses.
You can get sunglasses that are able to be worn in the surf, could be the go, Barz is one of several brands, UV rating and even polarized which is specifically to eliminate glare. 8)

Cheers for the feedback, wow I didn't realise there was that much of a risk, do you think taking supplements would help as well?

Back to you again, most of the problems guys are having from glare and UV is from prolonged exposure over quite a few years.
It usually can be helped just by wearing sunglasses when you are not in the water and like being in the sun not ggoing to the stage of not getting burnt. Some sun is necessary for vitamin D production and the natural way of getting it is better than any supplement.
For your eyes there are some problems with supplements, none of the off the shelf things are that good and some like vitamin A can be toxic if taken in large doses.
Do you actuallly have a problem? or are you worried about having a problem develop?
If you don't have a problem then I suggest the sunnies just for comfort and a good level of protection! :D
