Which surfboard fin to chose??

Postby FLino » Mon Apr 30, 2012 11:36 am

Hello

My name is Filipe and i'm from Portugal. I live near Peniche and so, i started surfing as a sport/hobby.

I had lessons and after that a bought my first board. A Southpoint 7.6

ou can see it here. http://www.pi-watersports.com/html/body_southpoint.html

My doubt now is about the fins. I want to change the fins, but i don't know wich one to chosse.

The fins are:

This is maybe my favourite, because i'm still starting and my board besides the size it's a very "lively" board and i'm trying to find more speed and stability.

A smaller size but i believe it would be enough maybe.

A balanced fin. A mid-term i believe.

Sunny Garcia fins. He is a heavy guy and i'm over 90 Kgs/200 lbs, so a size fit for me.

Between this fins, wich one would you chosse??

Thanks in advance for the answers.

Hi Flino, good to hear from a part of thworld I plan to surf in, lagido is very like my home break!

But to the fin problem, since you are starting out, I believe that you don't have to change your fins yet, getting the basic skills is dependent on surfing surfing and surfing.

The fins that you have with the board are fine!

Have a read of my fin primer it will help you gain an understanding of what fins can and cannot do!

By all means get another set, and I'd suggest the Sunny Garcias, and try the two and see which suits your developing style more.

Try swapping with your friends it may be a cheaper to experiment this way than buying an experiment.

Good luck I think you find at this stage there is not a lot of difference. :D

Really nice to know someone o knows Peniche and baleal. I spent my yesterday afternoon surfing in lagido. Great to know that i was surfing at home, but still most of the people surfing was foreigners.

The problem with my fins is that thay are not the ones that come with the board when you buy it first hand. It comes with a set of fins kind a like Fcs M-5 but in black. They are small and i notice the lost of speed and the instability.

But as you pointed, maybe the sunny garcia's is a best choice.

Thanks

Morning Flino, if the fins are small, you certainly won't have as much control , but it is probably more likely that you are surfing less confidently with them and so you are not generating the speed. It is actually a factor of rider positioning and force put into turns and finding the sweet spot ( also called the trim spot) on your board all mixed. The best riders can take just about any board and generate maximum speed .

Go well with the fins, I'll come and check your progress when next I come to Europe as I plan a holiday in Baleal with my son who lives in Austria

Hello Jaffa1949, i came here to tell you that i bought the HI-1 fins. Altough i know from the start that it isn't the change of fins that will make me surf, i must say that as you said it had some improvment in my confidence. At least i don't feel he board so unstable.

Waiting to see you surfing in baleal.

Being able to find the fins that is right for your board, the conditions, and you as rider is essential to your progression. There is a new toolless fin system "Fin-S" that lets you change out your fins in seconds. Seems like a cool way to be able to find your magical fin setup when you can change your fins with your friends in the water in between sets.

Johngrom what you are spamming needs only one post here in this thread it is appropriate, anywhere else in multiples is just plain advertrolling. Put your money where your mouth is and pay for an ad on the forum :D

Sunny's are expensive, M7's or GMB are about the same size but cheaper
