I have surfed Llangennith all my life. I’m a true Gower local so to speak. Loads to look at and do if there is no surf. I recommend you take some stuff to allow some arty photographs irrespective of the weather. I have loads of awesome images and I am still finding more (I’m semi pro and published presently with BBC interests as I write this reply!).
Oh – an aerobie on the expansive sands rules – go buy half a dozen tomorrow . . . LooK
. . . watch the whole vid to get a proper appreciation ( I used to throw javelin – I assure you this mottha’ goes way bonkers further!).
The spinach and egg pizza in the Kings Head pub at Llangennith has always proven awesome after a few bevvies too.
You need to get your son to do weightless squats now . . . and every day else his legs will tire quickly when surfing: swim too several times a week if you can . . . surfing is a way of life and you need to have some relevant endurance to be able to really enjoy it . . . I have never stopped surfing although I have stopped most all other activities . . . I do weightless squats everyday and cycle to keep in the zone (my swimming is top notch so I don’t swim that often at the moment).
From little perfect knee high walls to monster 20ft Llangennith max-outs . . . surfing rocks and I hope you get a swell when you visit the Gower.
NOTE: You can’t rush beach breaks. It might be half an hour between sets (flat then a nice couple of waves). My recommendation is to spend one day just laying down and paddling to catch waves. The next day do the same in the morning then in the afternoon try to stand up and surf and then just keep going for it (after all you can’t stand on a wave you ain’t caught!).
As a conscientious uk wide approved certified swimming pool maintenance technician I have to mention there are no lifeguards at Llangennith, but the rips are gentle unless the surf is powerful . . . just look at who is doing what in the water for a half hour or so before you choose your area to surf. If in any doubt ask a surfer . . . say you are novices and you‘ll get an honest reply as to the conditions.
