Is gun board a longboard?

Postby lch6816 » Tue Feb 28, 2012 12:24 pm

6.10×18 3/8×10 5/8×12 7/8×2 3/8
Is it a longboard?
Is it a shortboard?
Is it possible to duckdive it?
Is it easy to paddle compare with a shortboard
?
Any tips for using it?
I am totally a newbie, but I hv been using it for few months to learn pop up, paddling, catch waves, standing, and now i am practising duckdive, but i just always get washed back, so im wondering if something wrong with me ....
Appreciate anyone for help

That's not ideal dimensions for a beginner board - too short and way too narrow (unless you're like 5' tall and 100 lbs). And if it's truly a "gun" shape then it's not designed for the type of waves you'll want to ride as a beginner. But if it's what you've got and you're catching and riding waves on it, then more power to you.

As far as duck diving, that board is just large enough that I imagine it would be tough to duck dive unless you are pretty big. If you've just been surfing a few months, I wouldn't worry too much about your duck diving now - turtle rolling is an easier way to cope for most beginners. You can learn duck diving if and when you decide to go to a true shortboard.

Let's help you out here with a simple description and some pictures.
Length has nothing to do with gun boards except in extreme waves where length is need for paddling speed to match the waves speed on take off!
Guns are made with a combination of profile, plan shape, rail and a rocker that maximises the speed you can get from the board on a wave.
The severest gun is a point and run dagger that is designed with little turning capacity but the ability to go hell for leather.
As a surfer becomes more skilled at turning and other adjustments on the wave face the board lessens the speed features and softens the extremes.
The gun shape can be any length that allow the rail curve and they are narrower to achieve that.

A longboard is long IMO 8ft and up and there are a number of styles from the light progressive longboard which can in the hands of someone capable do most things a short board can but not to the extremes that short boards can be taken. If you are light the older traditional moves nose rides etc can be done.

Logs are longboards where people wish (for some retro reasoning) to go back to an era that preceded short boards because the boards had a limited capacity except in the hands of a master. Log masters riding amazes me
Longboards are usually wider and thicker and come with the usual number of fins 1 to 5 and occasionally none.

The plan, profile and rails can vary according to the shaper and the desires of the surfer and also the positioning of the wide point makes a huge difference in how the board does its stuff, rocker too is a major factor.

You can judge where the widest point on this longboard is

Neither of these boards are mine, they offer you some insight as to shapes.
The gun you could duckdive with practice the longboard practice maybe and a heavy rider.

Your board is a runner it will go fast when you get up to that skill level. A steep learning curve to get there on it, but you've started , don't stop

Really a detailed explanation! Thx for your effort!
so i can consider my semi -gun as a special kind of board in between longboard and shortboard, right?

Recently I passed the stage of duckdiving and now am practising how to catch waves, i always cannot catch any unbroken waves, its really frustrating, i am wondering how much forward i should lean to catch waves, should i make the nose just dig into the water?

Post a picture, that will enable all and sundry to diagnose your board's qualities.

We don't know how much rocker the beastie has, but if you can move forward so the nose is about an inch to an inch and a half out of the water when you are paddling on flat water, and you can generate speed that will be about the good sweet paddling spot, don't make the nose dig into the water, that is either a skilled technique to aid take off or most times the beginning of a wipeout on takeoff.
Your pop up if you arch your back will push the board down the wave face somewhat , always give a couple of extra paddle strokes when you go for a wave. If you do go for a wave, be determined, if you are hesitating you won't get it.

Just have fun keep doing and bit by bit it will come together

so true!
dont stop paddling, until the wave realy rolled away below you.. as long as you are still in/on it, keep paddling.. the moment you think its enough, add another 3 - 4 strokes and that will be it..
the wave is only gone, when its gone...
