cracks around the fin screws

Postby Buttertoes » Fri Feb 17, 2012 6:50 pm

Hey all, I thought I'd take my side fins off and give a single fin a try yesterday. This was the first time I've even really looked at my fins since I bought my board in June. The shop-keep assembled it for me and I hadn't touched them since. So I put the key in and that's when I noticed cracks around 3 of the 4 side fin screws.

The board's epoxy and the cracks don't feel like they're flaking off (they're level with the rest of the board) Is that something to be concerned about? I'm wondering how it even happened... could it have been from highway driving with my board in its bag? Do people usually remove the side fins when driving? Temperature fluctuation? The board has been going from as low as -5C to 20 in the house lately. I can take a photo of the cracks if needed

Thanks for your thoughts!

I would keep a close eye on any cracks. If they are taking in water you will want to have them repaired. Sometimes light cracks can be sealed with acrylic clear spray coat. Can you lightly push on them and see if any water appears after surfing. If they are only in the top paint coat of an epoxy board you may be alright, but keep an eye on them.

When I press on them there is no movement and no water oozed up. While I can feel the ridge of the cracks with my fingernail, they are even with the rest of the board. Here's a picture-
Thanks so much for any thoughts... when you're new you never know what you need to worry about :)
