FCS fins: K2.1 vs UL-5??

Hi there everyone.

I'm looking for a new thruster set-up for my shortboard (5'10 x 19"3/8 x 2"1/4). After sticking to FCS M-3 and M-5 for quite awhile, I want something more progressive and with more drive. I checked out a local shop and found K2.1 and UL-5 interesting. Unfortunately, I can afford only one set. Has anyone here tried both? I'm about 72-73kg with intermediate skills.

It depends what you are after. if it was me, i would get the small set of FCS H-3 nexus fins. great drive, good hold and a short arc. if you want a loose feel then get something with a bit more flex in the foil. if you pop into a good surf shop and explain what you want and what you are after they will be able to help you out. let us know which set you go for and what feel you get out of them. i find that when im looking for fins i will go for something that will make a massive change to my board. as sometimes just going from the G-5 basic fins that you get standard with surfboards to an M-5 wont make that much difference. it will make some but not massive. but if you go for some H-2's or H-3's then the differnce is huge and extremely noticeable.

Thanks very much. Actually, I bought K2.1 a week after I posted this thread but didn't have time to get back to it. After having a chat with some experienced surfers, it turned out that it was K2.1 vs AM-2 PC, not UL-5. I'd really love try AM-2 PC because of the drive but then the long arc isn't what I'm after.

By the way, K2.1 is awesome. In the first few sessions I felt that turning was a little more difficult than M-5, but faster. It requires more leg power but I still like it. The next set I'll experiment is AM-2 PC!

Hi Brozonelayer Your post show an interest in fins so would you to do a review on your adventures with fins Uncle Jaffa's fin review has stuff on fins but it is only one set of opinions and is possibly more relevant to the longer among the surf craft.
So a review of what you are riding and how they work for you would be good.Don't rely on the makers sites as they are always "the best thing since sliced bread" rather what works for the ordinary guy and girl type information, as that's what most of the forum crew are!
