Please help with board's volume!

Postby jaktequila » Sun Feb 05, 2012 6:40 am

Hi everyone!

I've been surfing my current hybrid 5'10 x 19''3/8 x 2''1/4 for nearly 3 months. I'm 5'11 and 71kg, able to catch 4-5ft. waves with this board without problems (although I have to paddle like hell, but I don't care). Now I'm looking for a 6'0 standard shortboard but not sure about the volume. Do you think I'll be fine with something like a 6'0 x 19'' x 2''1/4? My idea is to get something a little longer and narrower.

Thank you.
Jak

Above advice good but I'd say a 6'2" for the ' knackered float 'times  - you need to know you can get back to shore after all.

Best thing I'd suggest is looking up volume to weight ratio's - some shapers are posting them up on their sites now and that will give you the correct indication on whether or not the board will float you properly - personally I wouldn't go off dimensions alone, boards all have different foils, outlines and amounts of volume packed into them, which changes everything..hope this helps.

Hi-
I am 6' 200#. I recently got a Lost 6'0" Bottom Feeder. I am also nearly 55 years old and consider myself adv beginner to intermediate. I was getting really frustrated with the short boards (I loathe using long boards) as I could not do much, if anything on the mushy 1-3 foot waves we have here in SoNJ. For me, I can tell you, it is a lot about volume.

With the new BF, my wave count is much higher and I get into waves much earlier. on 1-2 foot waves I am actually able to catch and ride many. On 3-5, the board is very solid and extremely fast both down the line and in turns.

Check with manufacturer's on the more modern, higher volume boards. They may be short and ugly, but they allow you to rip even the small, mushy stuff.
