Shortboard question!

Postby crsurfer » Fri Jan 20, 2012 5:24 pm

Hi All!

well this is my first post! :)

Ok I have this problem, I ride (for about 2 years) a JS( Bruce Irons Model) 5'11 x 18(1/8) x 2(3/16) . Im about 5'11 and 178 pounds , Intermediate surfer and love to surf a rock bottom point, fast hollow, and 6 month offshore called Playa Negra in Costa Rica (pretty much like steamer lane). The problem is that the board is very very old and i broke the nose so im forced to buy a new board :(..

I went to a local store and the owner told me the board I was using was very small ( The owner of the store is the coach of the national surfing team)

So we showed me some boards:

Super Toy 5"11 19(1/8) 2(5/16)
Lost Sub-Driver 6'0 19 x 2.25

I found out that these boards had fat nose and wider. so these made me confused, after looking in the web it appears that boards like this are ment to be ridden in small waves (up to 4 feets) and choppy conditions.

I Love to ride 4-7 foot waves, clean conditions, fast and hollow waves, barrels, cutbacks, couple snaps.

So my question is, shall I try new boards or buy the same board I'm used to surfed.

thanks for the advises!

This is the spot I love to surf:

this is me surfing the board I used to ride so you have an Idea how I surf :)

if you are riding a 5'11 shortie at 178lbs then you are a really good surfer, I couldnt. When I was 175lbs I was riding a 6'2

The round nose fish/discs are not ideal for steep powerfull waves, so if you are intending to surf beach breaks that barrel you might want to stick to a shortboard design rather than a fish.

Lastly, if you are catching waves easily then your 5'11 is fine, but seems a little short. If, however, you felt that at times you where having a hard time catching waves then you need a slightly bigger board. It's all a matter of preference and ability
