Talking to an old bloke (mid 70s ) I surf with yesterday about the media hype we are coping here over shark attacks at the moment . It has gotten so bad they are even replaying the old jaws movies on TV . He hit the nail on the head . If you look out into that ocean I can guarantee there are sharks out there ( he himself had caught a 9 ft 6 bull shark where we surfed on Monday ) but the chances of being bitten are about 1 in a million . If you drive on the road your chances of being hurt or killed are much much higher and where would you rather be in the surf or on the road ?
The media are great complain about drops in tourist numbers then try and scare everybody away from one of our biggest attractions in Australia the ocean.
In saying that I hope the 2 latest shark bite victims make a fast recovery .

It's something to think about on an Alaia, the wood would be harder to chew through, but a lot more body is hanging off the board and your profile from underwater would look like an injured turtle :shock:

Haha, yh well fortunately i don't live in Australia, we do got sharks here but most of the sharks that do reach the beach are caribbean reef sharks. The tiger sharks are further out. I am not that scared of sharks, i did a shark dive once and it's truly amazing. I know that on a surfboard I look like sharkfood but yeah, It's still a part of the ocean and nobody owns it.

I would be the last person to argue against doing an activity knowing the risk. Just thought comments like yours is very easily expressed when you are sitting in front of a monitor safely out of the water.
If I know Chompy is in the water anywhere near me I would be paddling very fast towards the shore. And I have a healthy dose of fear for them.
There's also the matter of 'a little too soon', the guy attacked is still in hospital life hanging on a thread. Wish him the best...

Yes ofcourse the shark attacks are bad and ofcourse i would go out of the water if there is a shark near me. But sharks are in the ocean, they are like the kings of the food chain. If there would be no shark in the sea for some reason, the people and animals and every living orgasm will die because the food chain is broken, sharks are not killing machines, we people make them. The mafia is all behind the shark attacks, they see a lot of money in shark finning ( wich is really bad), a lot and i mean a lot of sharks die because of the sharkfinning. The sharks have like a massa propagation because of that massacre. I think this makes them angry too and that's why they kill so much. yes and not only best wishes for the guy who got attacked but for all the people who got attacked.

yes i will stick around, i am might going to start building my alaia this weekend because then my dad is back on the island, he brought me some shaping tools. and then the rest of the tools i am going to buy here.

So sharks 'get angry', do they get emotionally attached too?

You accessment of the food chain collapse is unfounded. BECAUSE sharks (generally speaking) are apex predators, if they get killed off, the food chain will NOT collapse - however if you kill off all the marine plankton, or take out all the bait fish population, this is when you will have a food chain collapse. Look at it this way, the food chain is a pyramid. if you take out the top level (the tip) then it's still stable. But if you take out the foundation then the whole structure will tumble.
What WILL happen if you do take out an apex predator, is that another organism (be it a lower level predator or an invading species) will take over and assume the position.

I bear no ill will, in fact I think we are on the same side, I just think it's best to be rational and use scientific evidence for arguing a cause.

I know what you mean, but the orgasm below the shark knows it is gonna get eaten, but it doesnt happen, so the food chain will get confused. but have you seen the movie sharkwater? its about how misunderstood the sharks are.

Maybe I misunderstood you, but there is no 'knowing' or 'unknowing' and 'confusion' about a food chain. Not sure if your Anthropomorphism is intentional or not?

An eco system, for the most part is self regulating, There is no 'intention' or a 'goal'.

I still don't think you are right because if the all sharks will die, then the fish below the shark on the food chain will over populate and then they will kill most of the fish below them on the food chain, those fish are gonna have a massa propagation and then all of this will continue with all the fish on the food chain, wich will make a big mess in the ocean.
